Do babies really need sunglasses?
Yes – and it's not a question of style, but of protection. The eyes of babies and young children are not yet fully developed. The lens is clearer than in adults and hardly filters any UV rays. This means that UV light penetrates deeper into the eye and can cause long-term damage.
When should a baby start wearing sunglasses?
As soon as your baby is exposed to the sun outdoors – so from the first few weeks. Protection is particularly important in direct sunlight, on the beach, in the snow or in high mountains.
What should you look for when buying?
- UV400 protection: This is the minimum – it filters 99–100% of UV-A and UV-B rays
- Category 3 or 4: Recommended for strong sun exposure
- Flexible frame: No risk of breakage, safe in case of a fall
- Elastic band: Keeps the glasses secure even on active babies
- Lightweight: No pressure on the sensitive bridge of the nose
- CE marking: Mandatory for sunglasses in the EU
What is the right size?
For babies (0–18 months), small, close-fitting lenses that cover the eyes well on the sides are suitable. For toddlers (from 2 years), there are larger models with more frame.
Our Tip
Choose sunglasses that your baby will actually wear – meaning they fit comfortably, don't pinch, and are ideally secured with an elastic band. At Pinkablu, you'll find sunglasses for babies & children with UV400 protection that meet these exact requirements.
