How important is the protection of sensitive baby and children's eyes?
Why sunglasses for children are more than just a fashion accessory
When the sun shines, we adults automatically reach for our sunglasses. But many parents don't know that children's eyes are much more sensitive to UV rays – and not just in summer, but all year round.
👁️ Why children's eyes need special protection
The eyes of babies and toddlers are still developing – their lenses are clearer, thinner, and more permeable than those of adults. As a result, UV radiation can reach the retina almost unfiltered. According to the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG), 90% of UVA and over 50% of UVB rays reach the retina during the first year of life. Only from the age of 18 onward are UV rays largely filtered by the lens.
Early sun damage is doubly harmful: UV light can damage protein structures in the lens over the long term – this can lead to premature lens opacities (cataracts) or even damage to the retina (macula) . Furthermore, UV rays promote skin changes on the eyelids and increase the risk of developing skin cancer in adulthood.
☀️ At what age does my child need sunglasses?
As soon as children regularly spend time outdoors – i.e. from the first year of life – sunglasses with 100% UV400 protection should be part of their basic equipment.
- From UV index 3 : sun hat and sunglasses are mandatory.
- From UV index 4 : Even when it's cloudy, sunglasses are a good idea – clouds hardly filter UV rays.
Children should seek shade or stay indoors during the two hours around the sun's highest point (usually 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Playing in the shade is safer and prevents sunburn and heat stress.
